San Francisco’s Fleet Week

During the Great Depression, president Roosevelt proposed an exposition to be held in San Diego, CA in order to promote and support San Diego’s economy. On May 29th, 1935 at 11 am, the US Marine Corps color guard led a parade across Cabrillo bridge to Plaza del Pacifico where the US flag was raised to symbolize the official opening of the California Pacific International Exposition. The week after was known as Fleet Week, where 114 warships, 400 military planes, 48 battleships, 3000 commissioned officers, and 55,000 enlisted soldiers arrived on the shores of San Diego. This exposition and parade was such a financial success that it was decided to be held for a second year… then continuously for 82 years and counting.

One of the locations that these fleets frequented was our great city of San Francisco! These fleets would dock and become visiting ships for tourists to come aboard and experience the ship. In turn, San Francisco welcomed the soldiers and allowed them to be a part of a vibrant community. Though the original Fleet Week and the modern day San Francisco Fleet Week are a bit different, the festivities remain the same… except for the famous Air Show that takes place every year over and around the Golden Gate Bridge! The Air Show began in 1981 and has become so popular that it is celebrating its 38th anniversary this year! Make sure not to miss such an exciting event!

Hippie Buses

Love Bus: “Peace, Love, Freedom & Adventure”

Among our hippie buses, this 1972 VW Hippie Bus with big bay windows was the original inspiration for San Francisco Love Tours. Allan hunted for this bus for quite a while, and when he learned that this particular bus had been a family vacation vehicle for years, creating many wonderful childhood memories, he knew this bus had the right soul and spirit. Even though the orange paint was faded and the engine needed to be completely rebuilt, this “Love Bus” had the true family history of peace, love, freedom and adventure.
